Agricultural Conservation

The Elkhart County SWCD can assist agricultural land users in applying conservation practices to their land.  An Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA), Clean Water Grant (CWI) grant has provided funding to hire Lynette VanBrandt as Ag Conservationist.  Lynette is available to work throughout the Elkhart River Watershed in Elkhart, LaGrange, Noble, and Kosciusko counties.

The Elkhart County SWCD is forming a team of farmers from Elkhart, LaGrange, Noble, and Kosciusko counties to assist in identifying the agriculture conservation needs and successes within the Elkhart River Watershed.  Team members would also help determine how the cost share funds from an IDEM 319 grant awarded to the Elkhart River Alliance would be distributed.  If you have further questions or would like to be part of the team, contact Lynette.

Ag Cost Share Program

A new cost-share program is now available for farmers in the Elkhart River Watershed, which includes parts of Elkhart, Kosciusko, LaGrange, and Noble counties. The program will provide financial assistance to farmers who are interested in installing conservation practices on their land. Eligible practices include manure management plans, exclusion fencing, rotational grazing, and many more. Applicants can receive up to 75% cost-share on approved practices.

The first round of applications begins immediately and will end June 30, 2008. Interested parties should contact Lynette VanBrandt, the Ag Conservationist at the Elkhart County Soil and Water Conservation District at 574-533-3630, ext. 3, for an application. Applications must be received by June 30th.

This program is sponsored by the Elkhart River Restoration Association and the Elkhart River Alliance through an EPA 319 grant. Visit www.elkhartriver.org or www.elkhartriveralliance.org for more information about these organizations.
