Area: 135 acres
Pipewort Pond, also known as the William L. Lieber Memorial Preserve or simply the Lieber Nature Preserve, is a unique and highly protected natural area within the Trout Creek Watershed. This pond was specifically established to provide critical habitat for plant and animal species that are endangered or threatened in the state of Indiana. Unlike many natural areas that balance recreation with conservation, Pipewort Pond is dedicated solely to preservation and ecological protection.
The pond takes its name from pipewort, a rare aquatic plant that thrives in its shallow, sandy-bottom waters. Pipewort is currently listed as an endangered species in Indiana, and Pipewort Pond provides one of the few remaining habitats in the state where this plant can persist. The presence of pipewort is an indicator of exceptionally high water quality, making the pond an important site for scientific study and conservation efforts.
As a designated Indiana Nature Preserve, all plants, animals, and natural features within Pipewort Pond are fully protected by law. This status ensures that the ecosystem remains undisturbed, allowing sensitive species and natural processes to continue without human interference. Together, Pipewort Pond, the Lieber Nature Preserve, and the broader Trout Creek Watershed play an essential role in safeguarding Indiana’s natural heritage and maintaining biodiversity for future generations.
