Little Elkhart River

HUC: 0405000112 (What is a Hydrologic Unit Code HUC?)

Area: 82,982 acres

The Little Elkhart River is a tributary of the Elkhart River, flowing through Elkhart and LaGrange counties in northeastern Indiana as part of the larger St. Joseph River watershed. Much of the river winds through predominantly agricultural landscapes, where it plays an important role in draining farmland and connecting smaller streams and ditches to downstream waters. The Little Elkhart River supports cool-water fish species and other aquatic life, but its water quality has been influenced by agricultural runoff, sediment, and areas where livestock have direct access to the stream. In response, ongoing watershed initiatives focus on improving stream habitat, reducing nutrient and sediment inputs, and encouraging conservation practices. These collaborative efforts bring together landowners, local communities, and conservation partners to restore and protect the long-term health of the river and the watershed it supports.
